Man Charged In Crash That Killed 6 Month Old

(CENTREVILLE) – A man who allegedly crashed into a vehicle that killed a 6 month old child has been formally charged.

St. Joseph County District Court officials 24 year old Jimenez Lopez has been arraigned on charges of failure to stop at the scene of an accident causing death, driving with a suspended license and operating under the influence causing death.

The St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department was called to the intersection of M-60 and Angevine Road just before 7 AM on November 1. Deputies determined that 30 year old Samantha Adams and her 6 month old son Alden were heading west on M-60, and had stopped to waif for traffic to clear so they could turn south on Angevine Road.

Lopez’s vehicle was also traveling west and failed to slow down or stop, and rear ended the Adams vehicle.

Deputies found Lopez 150 yards from the crash site in a corn field with minor injuries. Lopez admitted to first responders that he had been drinking and was trying to evade police.

Both of the Adams were taken to Beacon Health Three Rivers. Samantha Adams had minor injuries. Alden Adams was in critical condition and transferred to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, where he succumbed to his injuries,

Federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement determined that Lopez was a Mexican citizen and was in the United States illegally, plus he did not have a valid driver’s license.

Lopez is being held in the St. Joseph County Jail with bond set at $150,000. He is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing on November 22.
