(STURGIS) – Sturgis City Commissioners have voted to wait a couple of weeks to see if they want to hire a firm to help them find their next City Manager.

The Commissioners held a work session Wednesday afternoon and heard presentations from Amy Cell LLC and Walsh Municipal Services on how they would work with the City to help them find a new City Manager.

During Wednesday’s regular meeting, the Commission discussed the information from the work session and what their next step should be. Sturgis Mayor Jeff Mullins said during their first meeting in December, the Commission would be appointing an interim City Manager, and presumably that would be the current Assistant City Manger, Andrew Kuk. He also suggested talking to Kuk and seeing if he is interested in the City Manager’s job full time or not, before hiring a firm.

Commissioner Frank Perez disagreed with that idea. Perez says the Commission should move forward with hiring a search firm, and if Kuk is interested in the job, then he could be considered a candidate. Perez shared with the Commission that during the time he was in Human Resources, he had never been a part of a search process that just stopped

Mullins says he’s not asking for the process to stop, but to just pause for a short time to give him time to talk to Kuk. Perez then countered that the City still needs to go through this process.

City Manager Mike Hughes then informed the Commission that there was nothing in the City Charter that says they have to hire a firm to help them in this kind of search. Hughes says since this is a non-elected position, they can handle finding and hiring a City Manager in any manner they want to.

The Commission voted 6-2 to hold off on hiring a firm for a few weeks.

Hughes announced in October that he was resigning as City Manager on January 20, 2023.
