(THREE RIVERS) – A newspaper that has been operating in Three Rivers since the late 19th Century is closing their doors.

In a post on their website, the Three Rivers Commercial News announced that the final issue of the newspaper will be Saturday, December 10. The post also says that Editor and Publisher Dick Milliman informed the staff of the closure on December 6.

The Milliman family has owned the Commercial News since 1981.

The post quotes Milliman as saying that the decision whether to continue or not with the newspaper is one that ownership has been struggling with for several years, but their current financial situation made them take this step.

Milliman is quoted as saying that the newspaper could not generate enough revenue to remain viable, and they don’t have enough regular advertisers. In addition to the way social media has changed the dynamic of information sharing, Milliman says like many small businesses, the Commercial News never really recovered from the pandemic.

Milliman says they have been looking for a new owner for many years, but just couldn’t find either a group to purchase the Commercial News or anyone locally.

The Commercial News has been published in Three Rivers at least once a week since 1895. Several years ago, management made the decision to go from publishing a paper six days a week to twice a week.

The post says that any subscribers who have paid in advance for newspaper delivery can notify the company to have a portion of their remaining balance donated to a local charity: either the Three Rivers Area Community Foundation or the Three Rivers Promise.
