(LAGRANGE) – The LaGrange County Emergency Management Agency wants to remind people to be ready for the winter storm that is heading our way.

Executive Director Bill Morr says citizens should know the terms that are used during the winter months. A Winter Storm Watch means there is the potential of a significant winter weather event. Conditions are possible but not imminent.

A Winter Weather Advisory is when winter weather is imminent and may cause inconveniences. A Winter Storm Warning means a significant winter storm is imminent and is a danger to life and property.

A Blizzard Warning is when a significant winter storm with strong winds, snow, and low visibility is imminent and is a danger to life and property. An Ice Storm Warning is when dangerous ice accumulations are imminent.

What you can do to get ready for winter weather? Morr says prepare your home by purchasing needed supplies before the storm arrives. Have a plan in the event that you lose power or are unable to leave your home.

Also, put together a safety kit for your vehicle in the event that you need to be out during the storm. Include cold weather gear and other necessities that you may need such as a blanket, water, food or snacks, flashlight, a small shovel, charging cables for cell phones, and floor dry or kitty litter.

Morr says to stay up to date with the latest forecasts by watching your trusted weather sources. Communicate with others where you are or may be going.

Remember to check on your family, friends, and neighbors before, during, and after the storm. When making preparations, do not forget about your furry friends. Make sure that you have adequate food for them, limit their exposure to the frigid temperatures.
