(CENTREVILLE) – The St. Joseph County Commission had the chance to hear about plans to renovate the Centreville courthouse and for a new courts building.

During a recent Executive Session, the Commission heard from four different companies to discuss plans for the renovations. The first project would create a new court building in the former Three Rivers Public Library building on West Michigan Avenue. The cost would be just over $6.7 million, and is expected to be completed by the end of 2023.

The plan calls for the building to house Probate Court, Friend of the Court and the Juvenile Division of Family Court. Around 20,000 square feet would be renovated with approximately 2,000 square feet still free for future use.

The Courthouse in Centreville would undergo several updates and changes. That would include a new roof, moving District Court to the second floor and Circuit Court to the first floor, and having more options for the basement after those offices move to Three Rivers. This project would cost over $7.7 million and would be finished by the end of 2025.

Financing for the projects is still being discussed by County officials. Several options are being looked at, including American Rescue Plan Funds, County General Fund money, or a possible U.S.D.A. Loan
