(LANSING) – Sentence has been handed down to a former deputy with the Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Department.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced that 46 year old Todd Barkley was sentenced Wednesday in Jackson County to three years probation, 90 days in jail which was suspended, and will be required to register as a Tier 1 offender with the Michigan Sex Offender Registry for 15 years. In addition, Barkley will not be allowed to serve as a law enforcement officer ever again.

The charges against Barkley came after he arrested a woman several times. Investigators say he used his position with the Sheriff’s Department to coerce her into a sexual relationship. While he was off duty, Barkley drove to Fulton, Kentucky were the woman was being treated at a facility for substance abuse, and used his badge to check her out of the facility to have sex with her.

Barkley has since been fired from the Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Department.
