(UNDATED) – A person familiar with voters in northern Indiana has announced he is running for the U.S. Senate.

Republican U.S. Congressman Jim Banks is the first candidate to say he is running for the seat in the U.S. Senate, currently held by Mike Braun, who will vacate the seat after this term. Braun has announced he will run for Governor of Indiana in 2024.

Banks is from Columbia City. He previously served in the Indiana Senate and was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2016.

Political watchers have said other possible candidates for the U.S. Senate seat include former Governor Mitch Daniels, who just resigned as President of Purdue University and Republican U.S. Congresswoman Victoria Spartz.
