(UNDATED) – A Michigan State Police report says that St. Joseph County Sheriff Mark Lillywhite was allegedly speeding when he crashed into another vehicle.

According to the Kalamazoo Gazette, they received a report from the Michigan State Police through a Freedom of Information Act request. The report says that Lillywhite was allegedly driving a Chevy Traverse between 96 and 99 MPH on southbound U.S. 131 near XY Avenue when he struck a Nissan Rouge from behind at 2:18 AM on February 26.

Both vehicles went off the road.

As the investigation continued, Michigan State Police troopers determined signs of intoxication while talking to Lillywhite. After giving him standardized field sobriety tests and assessments, they asked Lillywhite to take a breathalyzer at the scene. He refused and was taken to Bronson Methodist Hospital to have his blood drawn. Lillywhite was then taken to the Kalamazoo County Jail on charges of operating while intoxicated and possession of a firearm while intoxicated.

Troopers say witnesses told them it appeared the Traverse didn’t have any headlights on prior to the collision.

The matter is still under investigation. Once it is completed, the case will be submitted to the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
