(STURGIS) – The Sturgis Board of Education is exploring the possibility of putting in a video scoreboard at the High School football stadium.

During Monday’s meeting, the School Board unanimously approved looking into getting a new scoreboard and video scoreboard for the football stadium. No money was committed to the project at this time.

During the May 8 School Board study session, Athletic Director Andy Hatt presented the idea of a new scoreboard on the wall of the Auxiliary Gym, and a new video scoreboard at the south end of the stadium. Hatt says he started looking into the possibility of a new scoreboard in 2022. ...... {LISTEN}.

After talking to Sturgis Superintendent Art Ebert, members of the community, and some area schools that have installed these types of scoreboard, Hatt says he put together a committee to explore the matter even more.

Hatt says the video board could be used for other events that have been or could be held at the football stadium. ...... {LISTEN}.

Requests for proposals were sent out and two came back in. Both of the companies presented to the committee and Hatt said the recommendation would be to go with Daktronics, which is the industry standard in scoreboards. Hatt says Daktronics would work with Sturgis Public Schools to find sponsors for the boards and to train people to use the equipment.

If the project were to not work out, Hatt says Daktronics would simply walk away and say thank you to Sturgis Public Schools. If the project does move forward, Hatt says the goal is to have the new boards installed by graduation of 2024.

The committee will move forward with exploring the project and report back to the School Board during a future meeting.
