(STURGIS) – What will the millage rate be for the City of Sturgis in the upcoming year?

The Sturgis City Commission hopes to have that set in the next couple of weeks.

During their meeting May 24, City Clerk Ken Rhodes shared with the Commission despite the fiscal year not starting for Sturgis until October, he needs to know the millage rate in June to send out tax bills. ...... {LISTEN}.

Rhodes says that over the last few years, the Commission has advertised the maximum millage rate for the public hearing. ...... {LISTEN}.

Rhodes says the Commission can approve a millage rate that is lower than the maximum rate of 11.6818. However, if they set a millage rate that is below the maximum amount allowed, and want to approve a higher amount, up to the maximum rate, they must hold another public hearing under law.

The Commission voted to have the millage rate advertised at 11.6818 mills for the public hearing, which will place during their June 14 meeting.
