(STURGIS) – Sturgis Public Schools is considering bringing a millage proposal to the voters.

During Monday’s study session, the Sturgis Board of Education heard a presentation from Finance Director Ray Sterling. He shared that in 2014, the Board of Education approved a non-homestead operating millage, for 18 mills over a 20 year period.

During the first seven years of the millage Sterling says the School District collected the full 18 mills. He says in two of the last three years, because of the Headlee Rollback, the District has not received the full amount.

Sterling says after consulting with a financial organization that assists the School District, they have decided to ask the voters for a millage proposal. ...... {LISTEN}.

Sterling says if the Board of Education approves moving forward with this millage request, they would select a date when there are other items up for vote, so the School District doesn’t absorb the full cost of the election.

The Board will be asked to vote on this proposal during their October 16 meeting.
