(GILEAD TOWNSHIP) – Michigan State Police are investigating a telephone scam by someone claiming to be a police officer.
Troopers say they were contacted by several individuals, who were called by someone claiming to be “Deputy Brooks” from the Branch County Sheriff’s Office. The suspect is telling the victims they have a warrant for their arrest and they need to make a payment immediately.
The payment is to be wired through Wal Mart, and for cash only. However, once the payment is received, the suspect’s phone number is disconnected and the victims are unable to get their money refunded.
The Michigan State Police is urging the public to remain vigilant and cautious to all scams. They say law enforcement will never call and ask for cash payments.
If anyone has information on this investigation, they are asked to call the Michigan State Police Post in Marshall at 269-558-0500.
