(UNION CITY) – Union City will be able to do a project, thanks to a grant from the State of Michigan.

Union City is receiving $850,000 from the Michigan DNR Spark Grant. It will be used for the Village’s “River’s Path: Connecting Parks, Bridging Communities!” The project will build a pedestrian bridge over the Union City Historic Water Trail on the St. Joseph River, and will connect the Riverview Park and the Heritage Cultural Park. In addition, it will add lighted ADA compliant walkways and access to the bridge and parks.

The bridge will have a treated timber deck and a weathered steel structure. It will be for pedestrian use only.

The project is 100% funded by the grant. It is meant to bolster the use of Union City’s recreational outdoor areas, add much needed accessibility, add another way to enjoy the beautiful historic river in the center of the Village, and be an additional draw to the downtown area.

Village officials say they are currently working on finalizing many details. They anticipate the project to be completed by the Fall of 2025.
