(CENTREVILLE) – The St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office is being asked to provide a Resource Officer for Centreville Public Schools.

St. Joseph County Undersheriff Jason Bingaman shared with the County Commissioners during their Tuesday Executive Committee meeting that he had been contacted by Centreville Schools about a Resource Officer.

Bingaman says this agreement is similar to the other two agreements the Department has. The first year cost is set, the rest is based on the CBA for the Sheriff’s Department. If it goes higher than 3 percent, then the cost for the school will go up. If it’s less than 3 percent there will be a reduction to the schools.

Bingaman says they have found out that having School Resource Officers in the buildings is a plus because if there is an incident in the building, there’s an individual trained to help with the safety and security of the school.

The Commissioners approved the idea and Bingaman said he will move forward with the negotiations.
