Albion Man Killed In Crash Following Pursuit

(ALBION) – An Albion man is dead following a police pursuit that ended in a crash.

Noble County Sheriff Max Weber says at 7:16 PM Thursday a deputy tried to initiate a traffic stop on a motorcycle heading south on State Road 9, that was traveling a 79 MPH in a posted 55 MPH zone. The motorcyclist turned onto County Road 300 South and refused to pull over. The deputy pursued the motorcycle with speeds reaching up to 100 MPH.

The motorcyclist made several evasive turns onto county roads, trying to lose the deputy. When the motorcycle entered Churubusco at the intersection of U.S. 33 and Pleasant Street, the officer the pursuit. Seconds later, he saw the motorcyclist involved in a crash.

The deputy found the motorcycle in the roadway, after striking the rear of a Jeep, which was crossing U.S. 33 from the west. The motorcyclist, identified as 37 year old Kyle Garrett of Albion, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Jeep, 37 year old Lance Wilson of Fort Wayne, was not injured.

Assisting at the scene were the Churubusco Police and Fire Departments along with the Indiana State Police.

At the request of Weber, the Indiana State will be handling the investigation.
