(STURGIS) – Two people are in custody in connection with the theft of a vehicle and a pursuit.

St. Joseph County Undersheriff Jason Bingaman says his department assisted the Sturgis Police on Sunday with the pursuit of a stolen vehicle. During the chase, the driver of the stolen automobile pulled into a yard in the 400 block of Edka Street.

The driver and his female passenger fled the area on foot. Deputies located the female passenger, and arrested her. They searched for the driver and found him walking north on Michigan Avenue near Cottage Street. When deputies tried to stop him, the man ran away, going west and north through several yards.

Sturgis Police and Deputies set up a perimeter, and called for a Michigan State Police K-9 Unit. With help of the K-9 Officer and handler, deputies located the 18 year old driver as he was trying to hide in a back yard.

The passenger, a 33 year old Sturgis woman, was taken to the St. Joseph County Jail on felony drug charges and for obstructing police.

Sturgis Police are pursuing charges against the driver.
