(UNDATED) – Indiana Michigan Power is looking for public input on two of their dams and what should be done.
I&M will be holding two public input meetings to discuss their Mottville and Elkhart hydroelectric facilities that are on the St. Joseph River, along with their generation resource planning process. The company is exploring the best long term plan for both of these facilities, with the upcoming FERC license coming due. Right now, the options include relicensing both facilities so they can continue to run, or decommissioning both, removing them and restoring a free flowing river.
The Elkhart Hydroelectric Facility was completed in 1913 and the Mottville Facility in 1923. Because there are aging, ongoing work to ensure their operability and service is critical. This comes at a financial and socioeconomic impact that will be evaluated. I&M is proactively working to make an informed decision regarding both facilities futures that balance these factors and best serves their customers, the community and the environment.
I&M is holding two public open houses to share more about these two facilities and get input from the community. Both will be at the Northern Indiana Event Center, 21565 Executive Parkway in Elkhart. The first will be tonight from 5:30 to 7:30 PM, and the second will be on Thursday, July 11 at the same time.
