(LOCKPORT TOWNSHIP) – Three Rivers Police have arrested a suspect wanted in a carjacking.
Authorities were notified on Saturday about a man who was accused of stealing a car and assaulting someone in Kalamazoo County earlier in the day.
The St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office says a deputy located the stolen vehicle by using the Flock System, which is an automated license plate reader system. The deputy tried to stop the vehicle but was unsuccessful. The suspect hit an occupied vehicle and then drove through some yards before crashing the stolen vehicle and running away in the area of Buckhorn Road near Lovers Lane in Lockport Township.
Three Rivers Police issued a be on the lookout to the public for Ernest Wellington, described as 5 for 9 inches tall and 185 pounds with tattoos on his neck, back, chest and arms.
A K-9 officer was brought to the area and was unable to fund the suspect. The Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol and Drone Aerial Team were also unable to locate him.
Three Rivers Police received a call a few hours later from a citizen who saw Wellington. Officers arrived and took him into custody.
