(STURGIS) – The Sturgis City Commission has approved raises for themselves.

Wednesday night, Sturgis City Clerk Ken Rhodes presented a recommendation from the Elected Officials Compensation Commission, who met earlier in the month to review the current City Commission pay and make a recommendation for any changes.

The EOCC recommended that the pay for Mayor be increased from $3,400 a year to $4,600 and the pay for Commission be moved up from $2,750 to $3,700.

The issue must be placed before the City Commission within 30 days of being presented to the City Clerk, or else it automatically becomes effective, in accordance with The Home Rule City Act 279 of 1909.

Commissioner Jeff Mullins shares why he doesn’t see a need for a pay increase for the Commissioners at this time. ...... {LISTEN}.

Mullins then made a motion to reject the recommendation for a pay increase, which was supported. It was then voted down 8-1.
