(ANGOLA) – A Northeast Indiana man has been convicted by a Steuben County Superior Court Jury in connection with the June 2023 rape of a teen.

It took three hours of deliberations before the jury came back with guilty verdicts against 31 year old Jorge Juarez Lopez of Orland. He was found guilty on two felony counts of rape while armed with a deadly weapon; two felony counts of intimidation and a misdemeanor charge of possession of a counterfeit government issued identification.

On June 29, 2023 Steuben County Sheriff Rodney Robinson says his department was called Cameron Memorial Community Hospital in Angola on a report of a woman who was in the Emergency Room and may have been sexually assaulted.

Deputies spoke to the woman, and determined an assault had happened. They called in Sheriff’s Detectives to assist in the investigation.

After being treated for minor injuries and evidence being collected at the hospital, the victim provided officers with several details about the incident, that happened at a residence in rural Milgrove Township near Lake Pleasant.

Detectives were able to locate the Lopez who was brought to the Sheriff's Office to be interviewed, and then arrested and taken to the Steuben County Jail.

Sentencing is scheduled for April 9. Lopez faces a sentence of between 20 and 40 years on the rape convictions and 1 to 6 years years on the intimidation charges.
