(COLON) – Colon Schools Superintendent Penny Brockway responded to an incident that happened Friday night.

In a letter that was posted on the School District's Facebook page on Saturday, Brockway says around 8:30 PM Friday, school officials received information from a parent that a former Colon student had threatened the people of Colon with the use of guns and ammunition. The parent said the threat was sent over Snap Chat.

The Colon Police and St. Joseph County Sheriff's Departments were notified and began an investigation. With the location of the former student still unknown by 9 PM, school officials alerted parents with an automated phone call.

Police informed school officials around 10 PM that the former student had been located and there was no further need for concern. A second phone call was sent to all parents and guardians at that time.

Brockway says when a concern in brought to School officials it will be taken seriously and they will move on it immediately. She says as a mother, she realizes and appreciates the stress that the vagueness of the information shared Friday caused the public. As a School official, she says she must balance the needs and legal rights of all parties involved in the safety of each child.

Brockway says if anyone has further questions or concerns, they can call the District office and set up an appointment to speak with her.
