(BATTLE CREEK) – A second Mexican Gray Wolf wolf pup at Binder Park Zoo has died from Eastern Equine Encephalitis.

Officials with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and the zoo announced late Wednesday that the second pup died in early September, one day after a sibling also died from EEE. Test results showed what the cause of death was.

The two pups were from the same litter, which were born at the zoo in June. A surviving pup and the parents are healthy and being monitored closely.

Health officials say EEE infection in canines is very rare. However there have been a few cases reported in domestic dogs.

Officials at the zoo are asking people who visit to wear insect repellents with DEET. The zoo will also provide bug spray stations throughout the park.
