(CENTREVILLE) – The restitution hearing for a Sturgis woman charged with
embezzlement will continue at a later time.

St. Joseph County Circuit Court officials say 44 year old Jill Schmidt was in court on Wednesday, but they were not able to take care of all the business they needed to.

Schmidt was arrested in August 2018 after an investigation by Michigan State Police discovered that she allegedly embezzled at least $100,000 from BHS Group, a property and real estate company. Schmidt had been the office manager at the business for several years, before leaving in 2017.

Court officials say Schmidt plead to a charge of embezzlement of over $10,000 but less than $20,000. With that plea, two other charges of embezzlement were dropped by the St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office.

Schmidt was given a one year sentence, but that could be reduced to six months if she is able to pay back half of the amount determined by the Court in a year's time.

No date has been set for the continuation of the restitution hearing. Court representatives did say they hope to have the next court date set by the first part of next week.
