(PARK TOWNSHIP) – A man and a woman were arrested Friday following a high speed chase.

St. Joseph County Sheriff Brad Balk says his deputies tried to stop a vehicle in Park Township on U.S. 131 because of a headlight violation. The auto drove away and led deputies through Fabius Township and Three Rivers, with speeds going over 100 miles per hours.

Deputies put down stop sticks near the intersection of Roberts Road and M-60 before losing sight of the vehicle. The automobile was found in a ditch on Shaffer Road near Drummond Road in Constantine Township. A K9 officer was called in and tracked the suspects through a wooded area and a swamp.

Balk says a resident of that area called police, saying that a man and a woman along with two children showed up their house, wet and asking for help. Deputies arrived at the house and identified the two adults as the occupants of the vehicle.

A 24 year man and a 25 year old woman, both of Edwardsburg, were arrested on charges of fleeing and eluding, resisting and obstruction, child abuse and multiple driving violations.

Assisting deputies were the Three Rivers, Constantine and White Pigeon Police Departments, the Michigan State Police and Child Protective Services.
