(COLDWATER) – A jury found an Algansee Township man innocent related to a 2018 assault and attempted abduction.

Branch County Circuit Court officials say the jury returned not guilty verdicts Thursday morning for 37 year old Jason Rodgers. The jury deliberated for only 25 minutes before presenting the verdicts on charges of unlawful imprisonment and assault with a dangerous weapon.

Rodgers was arrested in November of 2018 following an investigation by Michigan State Police. Troopers were called to the 800 block of Poley Road in Kinderhook Township on July 27, 2018. A 54 year old woman was leaving for work at 2 AM and saw a large piece of wood obstructing her driveway.

She got out of the vehicle and removed the wood. As she was getting back into her automobile, she was attacked from behind and hit in the head and back with a piece of wood. She was also struck several times in the face.

The attacker was wearing camouflage, a ski mask and gloves. He also told the victim he had a gun.

The woman fought back, screamed and honked her horn and the suspect ran away. K-9 units were brought in and recovered weapons and other items left at the scene. Those items were send to the Michigan State Police lab in Lansing for analysis, and eventually led to Rodgers' arrest.
