Recount Shows Mendon Township Proposal Passed
By: Mike Stiles - Wednesday, November 20, 2019

(CENTREVILLE) – A recount of votes cast November 5 in Mendon Township shows that Proposal 1 did pass.

The St. Joseph County Board of Canvassers met Tuesday morning to conduct a hand recount of the ballots cast November 5 by Mendon Township residents on Proposal 1. The recount was in response to a petition that
was filed last week.

County Clerk Lindsay Oswald says the hand count of the ballots resulted in affirming the 650 ballots for the 650 voters in the November 5 election. The results were certified as 331 YES votes and 319 NO votes. These are the same number of Yes and No votes as were originally reported on November 5.

Oswald says the Dominion equipment selected for purchase in 2017 to replace the outdated Accu-Vote machines has been through vigorous testing on the Federal and State levels, and then tested again prior to every election. Oswald says the recount serves to ensure every vote was properly cast and counted.

Proposal 1 will establish the restrictions, requirements and guidelines for the construction of small and large solar energy farms within the Township. That would be including, but not limited to, the requirement to obtain a special use permit from the Mendon Township Planning Commission before constructing a large solar energy system anywhere in the Township.
