County Commission May Ask Governor For Guidance With McDonough
By: Mike Stiles - Friday, October 2, 2020

(CENTREVILLE) – St. Joseph County Commissioners may look to Governor Gretchen Whitmer for help with a matter.

During their Executive Session on Wednesday, the Commission talked about the possibility of contacting Whitmer and asking what the appropriate steps would be in the situation the County is facing with Prosecutor John McDonough. The Commission could vote on what to do during their meeting on Tuesday.

Questions about McDonough's job have been brought before the Commissioners since his arrest in May on a charge of drunk driving, and since his arrest in September for violating his bond. Specifically, comments from the public have focused on the fact that McDonough is continuing to be paid his salary of $120,000 a year, and he has not been in the office.

Many citizens of St. Joseph County have been asking the Commissioners to have McDonough removed from office, saying this is very similar to when St. Joseph County Circuit Court Judge James Noecker was removed from the bench by the Michigan Supreme Court following a crash he was in in 2003.

County Administrator Teresa Doehring reminded the Commissioners on Wednesday that they are limited by law on what they can do.
