(PENN TOWNSHIP) – A weekend motorcycle accident sent a man to the hospital.

The Cass County Sheriff's Department was called just after 8 PM Sunday to investigate a crash near the intersection of Dutch Settlement Road and East Street in Penn Township. Deputies arrived and found a motorcycle, but no victim. They were notified by Cass County Central Dispatch that a 911 call came in about a subject walking up a driveway in the 16,000 block of Marcellus Highway, but the subject left in an unknown direction.

Cass County K-9 Officer Faust was brought in to attempt to locate the injured individual. Faust tracked the subject to a thick wooded area one-quarter of a mile from the crash sight, where he was laying in a ditch with a head injury.

The victim, 28 year old Travis Herman of Marcellus, told deputies he was driving east on Dutch Settlement Road when he went off the roadway and struck several trees.

Herman was taken by Pride Care Ambulance to South Bend Memorial Hospital to be treated for his injuries. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the incident. Speed may have been a factor in the crash.

Assisting deputies were the Penn Township Fire Department, the Pokagon Tribal Police and the Michigan State Police.
