(CENTREVILLE) – A guilty plea has been entered by a man accused of killing a woman in a hit and run accident.
St. Joseph County Circuit Court personnel say 27 year old Thomas Stambaugh entered the plea to a charge of driving on a suspended license causing death. He struck and killed 62 year old Laura Jacobs of Three Rivers in the parking lot of the Three Rivers Meijer Store.
According to Circuit Court officials, this charge carries a 15 year sentence, or a fine of between $2,500 to $10,000, along with forfeiture of his vehicle. A second charge of failure to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in death was dropped.
Just after 1 PM on June 18, the Three Rivers Police were called to the Three Rivers Meijer Store. Officers and paramedics started to treat Jacobs, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
On July 17, the Michigan State Police Fugitive Team located Stambaugh at a home on Featherstone Road. He was initially charged with absconding parole, with Three Rivers Police requesting the charge of hit and run a few days later.
Stambaugh will be sentenced on November 13.
