(STURGIS) – The City of Sturgis now has a way for children to get their letters to Santa Claus.
A “North Pole Express” mailbox has been brought to Sturgis, following the cancellation of Christmas In The City, due to COVID-19 gathering restrictions, which means Santa's traditional stop in Sturgis won't be taking place.
The North Pole Express mailbox is located in front of the Sturgis Police and Fire Station, 122 North Nottawa Street. Sturgis Director of Public Safety Ryan Banaszak says both the Police and Fire Departments are excited to help Santa out giving this year's situation. Banaszak says they hope to ensure that each child has a memorable holiday season, in spite of the unique circumstances in 2020.
The Sturgis Police and Fire Departments have also created a special Christmas card that will be available for children to pick up when they drop off their letters to Santa.
City officials are told that letters mailed through the North Pole Express mailbox are guaranteed to reach Santa before Christmas. For letters placed in the mailbox by December 16, Santa will be working to get a response back to everyone before the big day.
In addition, the City is working with the North Pole on a special video appearance or two by Santa due to the fact that he could not make it in person before Christmas this year. Details are still to be determined, but the City will follow up with more information as it is available.
