(STURGIS) – A Monday morning fire injured two people and completely destroyed a house.
Deputy Fire Chief Andy Strudwick says the Sturgis Fire Department was called to a structure fire in the 400 block of West West Street at 4:10 AM. While heading to the house, dispatch said Sturgis Police was on scene and confirmed that all of the occupants were out of the dwelling.
Two of the residents were burned and taken by Life Care Ambulance to the Sturgis Hospital Emergency Room for treatment.
Heavy fire was found coming from a rear porch area of the home when firefighters arrived. They deployed a hose line to battle the blaze and cut a roof vent to help clear the smoke.
Due to the age of the home and the nature of the construction, fire crews had a difficult time reaching the fire. Many of the interior walls and ceilings had to be opened up as well as much of the siding in order to fully extinguish the blaze.
The cause of the fire is still unknown and remains under investigation. Damage estimates are not known.
