(LAGRANGE) – A fire in downtown LaGrange destroyed a building and sent smoke into the air that could be seen for miles around.

The fire was called in during the late morning hours on Tuesday in a building in the 100 block of Detroit Street, right across from the LaGrange County Courthouse. The fire was first reported in the portion of the building that houses the Family Dollar Store and Gould Sports.

The LaGrange Fire Department was the first on scene and immediately called for back up. Departments from Howe, Stroh, Shipshewana, Kendallville and Middlebury arrived and joined in trying to extinguish the blaze.

Around 3 PM, the roof of the building collapsed as the fire raged on. More fire departments were called in including the Fremont and White Pigeon crews.

Fighting the fire put a heavy strain on the LaGrange water supply. Other fire departments from Albion and Angola, Indiana along with Burr Oak and White Pigeon from Michigan among others were bringing in water from other locations so crews could continue to douse the buildings.

Fire crews worked into the early morning hours. The fire was called under control just after 1:30 Wednesday morning.

A cause of the fire has not been determined. The Indiana State Fire Marshall will investigate the situation.

Because of the strain on the water supply, LaGrange residents are under a boil water advisory until further notice.
