(COLDWATER) - Charges has been filed against a man for a weekend incident at an area hospital.

Branch County Prosecutor Zach Stempien says his office has charged a 38 year old man after an incident that happened February 1 at Insight Hospital & Medical Center in Coldwater.

Stempien says the suspect was a voluntary psychiatric patient, and around 6 PM on February 2 he escaped from a secure wing by using a broom and a metal pipe to assault a security officer and a registered nurse.

The suspect then jumped from a third floor window and fell 20 feet, sustaining significant leg injuries. He was taken into custody by the Coldwater Police.

The man is being held at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne where he is being treated for his injuries.

Stempien says under new Michigan legislation, the man will face penalties that double standard fines and carry up to four years in prison for assaults involving dangerous weapons on medical personnel.
