(FREMONT) - Indiana State Police are renewing their appeal for information in the 1988 shooting death of a NE Indiana law enforcement officer.
They are also urging anyone with knowledge of the case to come forward.
Fremont Town Marshal Bobby Moore was shot and killed July 26, 1988, outside his home in the 300 block of East Spring Street. Reports at the time indicated he was shot at least once in the shoulder and through the heart.
Investigators say the passage of nearly four decades does not mean the case cannot be solved. Authorities believe someone in the community likely saw or heard something that night but never reported it.
Police had little evidence in the initial investigation and relied heavily on door-to-door canvassing because home surveillance technology was virtually nonexistent in 1988.
There were several people of interest early in the case, though no prime suspect was ever identified. At the time, police sought to question Moore's stepson, Samuel Sisler, but emphasized he was not considered a suspect.
There were further complications in the case. Five months before Moore's death, he shot and killed his wife, Barbara Moore, claiming self-defense. Charges against him were later dropped, and he was reinstated as town marshal in May 1988, but the incident divided the community.
Investigators believe that lingering tensions from that event may have contributed to the motive for Moore's killing.
