(LAGRANGE) – A Colon, Michigan man has been sentenced to 38 years in prison in Northeast Indiana.

LaGrange Superior Court officials say Gregory Kurzawski was sentenced after being convicted for attempted robbery along with attempted aggravated battery. The penalty was enhanced due to Kurzawski’s status as a habitual offender.

A charge of attempted murder and charges of drug and firearms possession were dismissed in exchange for the guilty pleas to attempted robbery and attempted aggravated battery. According to court records, Kurzawski pleaded guilty but mentally ill.

On January 17, 2024 at 4:46 PM, the LaGrange County Sheriff’s Office received a phone call about shots being fired in the 6800 block of North County Road 270 East. The caller said that a blue van entered a long lane on private property and he was checking on the situation. The caller says that Kurzawski stopped the van, got out, and fired several shots at the caller from an AR style rifle.

Kurzawski then drove off west on County Road 700 North.

Authorities say Kurzawski traveled to the Howe Dollar General Store at 5580 North State Road 9. While there he attempted to get a customer to give him a ride. When the request was denied, Kurzawski opened the customer’s passenger door and pulled a gun as he dove into the pickup. The customer ran toward the store as Kurzawski fell out of the driver’s side door and discharged a single round.

Deputies arrived at the Dollar General Store, detaining Kurzawski and then arresting him.
