(STURGIS) - The Sturgis Board of Education has voted to bring a bond proposal to residents of the school district.
Monday night the Board of Education voted unanimously to present a bond proposal on May 5, 2026.
Sturgis Superintendent Dr. Art Ebert shared that at a recent retreat, the Board discussed several topics, including a proposed timeline for the proposal, collecting information on previous sight sinking funds and bond and millage proposals for the District.
After several minutes of the Board discussing some of the proposed projects and if they needed to be done, Ebert reminded them that these items were what the community said they wanted and would support. This came from the community engagement sessions that were held. Ebert says there is no perfect proposal, and everyone has slightly different ideas of what should be done, but this is the consensus of the community. (LISTEN ABOVE)
The bond proposal if approved, would ask for such items as making all buildings ADA compliant, having secure vestibules at all buildings, expanding and renovating the fabrication lab, fixing flat roofs on the buildings, renovating classrooms, redesigning media centers, bathroom renovations, replacing boilers as needed, a new track and field area, lockers for the soccer teams and grandstands, and turf for the football, baseball and softball fields. It would also ask for a new aquatic center.
This would all be one ballot question.
The bond would be a no mill increase, and remain at the current rate of 7 mills, and will extend the current millage to be paid off in 2058. If approved the bond would generate $30 million in 2026 and $68 million in 2029.
