(WHITE PIGEON) – One person is dead and one is in critical condition following a shooting incident at the White Pigeon McDonald's restaurant.

Michigan State Police troopers and detectives were called to 103 South U.S. 131 around 4:30 PM Friday for a report of a shooting incident in the restaurant’s parking lot.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a separated, married couple from Sturgis met at the McDonald's for their customary child exchange. While the woman was sitting in her car and her husband was standing outside, they got into a verbal altercation. At some point, the man allegedly pulled out a firearm and shot his wife multiple times before shooting himself.

The 25 year old victim was taken to South Bend Memorial Hospital with life threatening injuries, but later succumbed to those injuries and was pronounced dead.

The 29 year old suspect was transported to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo. He is in critical condition with life threatening injuries.

Detectives say the couple’s children were not present during the incident, and were with other family members.

Assisting at the scene were the White Pigeon, Constantine and Three Rivers Police and Fire Departments; the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office; Life Care Ambulance, Med Flight and Samaritan Flight.

The matter is still under investigation. When it’s completed, a copy of the full report will be sent to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office for review.
