(STURGIS) - Following Sunday afternoon’s storms, the City of Sturgis will be starting brush pickup throughout town on Wednesday, April 2nd instead of Monday, April 7th.

Sturgis City Manager Andrew Kuk says as with other pickups, the Department of Public Services crews will begin pickup on the north side of town and work their way south. Due to the anticipated volume of pickup, citizens should be patient as crews make their way through town. The City will provide updates on progress via their Facebook page.

Residents are asked to place brush in the terrace area of their property. For properties with sidewalks, this is the grass area between the sidewalk and the curb or road; for properties without sidewalks, this should be on the grass close to the curb or road. Please do not place brush in the road or gutter pan.

Kuk says as you are cleaning brush, please be sure to watch for downed power lines; do not attempt to move or clear these lines. If you see downed power lines within brush or on your property, please contact the non-emergency Central Dispatch number at 269-467-4195. If you have reason to suspect the lines may be energized, please call 911.

In addition Kuk says the City compost site on Fawn River Road will also be opening today, April 1 to accept brush. The Compost site will operate on its normal hours of Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12 PM to 7:30 PM; Saturdays from 9 AM to 5 PM and Sundays from 1 PM to 5 PM.

City residents may access the compost site for free by picking up a pass at Sturgis City Hall or taking proof of City residency to the compost site. Area township residents may purchase a pass at Sturgis City Hall or contact their township offices.
