Suspect Arrested In Butler Shooting Incident

(BUTLER) – A suspect is in custody following a shooting incident.

Butler Police Chief Matthew Traster says at 2:35 PM Thursday, his department responded to the 100 block of West Willow Street in reference to a person being shot. Officers arrived and found 37 year old Gary Chaffins of Butler with a gunshot wound to the shoulder. Police learned the suspect was still in the residence.

The DeKalb Count Sheriff’s Department, the Waterloo Town Marshall’s Office, the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office; the Indiana State Police, the Auburn Police Department ERT Team, and the DeKalb County Prosecutor’s Office all arrived at the scene.

Officers made contact with the suspect, 40 year old Danny James Montoya of Butler, and after a short time he was arrested and charged with a felony count of criminal recklessness with a firearm. He is being held in the DeKalb County Jail.

Chaffins was taken to an area hospital and is listed in stable condition.

The incident is still under investigation.
