(READING) – A Southern Michigan law enforcement officer is facing charges of domestic violence.
According to WILX TV, at 12 AM on December 22, Michigan State Police were sent to a house on Ridge Drive in Reading Township on reports of an assault. Troopers were able to determine that a 48 year old Reading man assaulted his girlfriend, a 41 year old Reading woman.
The man was arrested and taken to the Hillsdale County Jail. Hillsdale County officials identified the man as Eric Stolberg, the Reading Police Chief. He was later able to post bond.
WILX TV says Hillsdale County Prosecutor Neal Brady says the case will be referred to the Attorney General’s Office for review. This is the usual procedure when a local official is accused of a crime.
Brady says the Attorney General can take the case themselves, or assign it to a special prosecutor which is usually a prosecutor from a neighboring county who does not have a conflict. What’s it’s been assigned or accepted by the Attorney General, they will make a determination on what, if any charges will be authorized and how the case will move forward.
