(STURGIS) – The City of Sturgis has decided to create an ordinance regarding curbside recycling.
Wednesday night the Sturgis City Commission revisited the matter of recycling services. They had asked City Staff to bring back some different options to be looked at and discussed on recycling, since the City’s current contract with Borden ends on December 31.
One of the options that was presented to the Commission was an ordinance. Sturgis City Manager Andrew Kuk gives an overview of what the ordinance would do for Sturgis. ...... {LISTEN}.
Some of the other options presented to the Commission included a stop-gap one year contract with Borden; Letting the current contract end then take further action; Letting the current contract end and end curbside recycling in Sturgis; and Directing City Staff to develop a recycling drop off service.
Commissioner Marvin Smith made a motion to let the contract end and present a referendum to the citizens to vote on. City Attorney TJ Reed says that’s not a good way to go for Sturgis. ...... {LISTEN}.
Smith’s motion was voted down 6-2. A motion was then made to move forward with the ordinance, and bring it back for a first reading at the next Commission meeting. That passed by a vote of 6-2.
